In the spring of 2008 my mother was diagnosed for cancer. The main tumor was based on the pancreas and was gone too far  to do something about. I went to visit her as much as possible. I tended to stay on the road to photograph a slag heap from a disused coal mine nearby her place. I had no conscious thought that it would later become a metaphor of our last time together.
